Celebrating #WomenInPolicing this #WomensMonth Meet Colonel Michelle Matroos.
She is a driven, professional, committed, dedicated and motivated member who prides herself on serving the South African Police Service (SAPS) with her skills as an effective communication official in the Eastern Cape.
She is responsible for various functions of the
Corporate Communication Component, such as Community and Stakeholder Relations, Event/Project Management, Internal Communication, Protocol and has vast knowledge of Ceremonial Discipline and Protocols, Corporate Image, and Public Speaking.
No task is too big or too small for her.
With her 30 years' experience in the organisation, as well as her experience of front-line service, she has acquired the knowledge to understand the culture and dynamics of the SAPS.
The bigger the challenge, the better the outcome, is her motto.
Colonel Matroos' inner passion to educate the SAPS's members and community, motivated her to assemble a team of five members to spread the mandate of Government on the Protocols of the prevention of COVID-19 and the alignment of the National Lockdown regulations.
At
the same time, the scourge of gender-based violence reappeared and a sudden increase in this social crime was reported in the province.
New ways of reaching the target audience - the victims and perpetrators of gender-based violence - had to be devised.
Colonel Matroos engaged with the Department of SASSA, and used their paypoints, banks, shopping malls and taxi ranks to create awareness.
She and her team held door-to-door campaigns, and the rivers, valleys and mountains where women did their laundry and the farm workers worked in their fields, became part of their target areas.
The team, led by Colonel Matroos, continued with a Back-to-School/Back-to-Basics Project at the beginning of 2021, during the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was important to continue creating awareness about gender-based violence, and at the same time, bullying at schools became a widespread problem in the country.
The team paid a visit to more than 24 schools, mostly in the rural areas.
She says it is her passion to serve the community, that helped her achieve the goals she set for her career and herself.
Her future goals are to continue serving the SAPS and her country with integrity, professionalism and passion.
