Read more below: The 80 participants from Bonteheuwel graduated on Saturday, 31 October, after attending the five-day literacy workshop.
The workshop, which was held from 26 to 30 October 2020, was conducted by lead facilitator Jeff Paulse from Reading and Writing Solutions.
The community workshop was at no cost to participants.
Attendees were teachers from Bergsig Primary, Disa Primary, and Bramble Primary.
Participants also included Early Childhood Development practitioners, parents as well as Grade 10 and Grade 11 learners from Bonteheuwel.
Some of the topics discussed included teaching word recognition skills, understanding and teaching language structures according to the
various phases and grades in line with the current CAPS curriculum, as well as engaging learners in fun, interactive teaching methods and remedial reading interventions.
‘As a City, it is encouraging to partner with this organisation to empower our young people and those who work closely with them - be it teachers, parents or caregivers - with the necessary tools to help improve literacy.
The city, especially the community of Bonteheuwel, will benefit in terms of having people who are trained to assist school-going children with reading, listening and learning.
Part of the workshop touches on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) curriculum, which provides detailed guidelines of what to teach and assessments on a grade-by-grade and subject-by-subject basis.
The workshop aims to assist with changing the lives of many people.
‘The other benefit of the workshop was to assist participants to listen to learners so as to better assist them.
Most of the children in the communities do not have the proper support in terms of homework support, resulting in some children dropping out of school or becoming truant learners.
The workshop therefore aimed to equip parents and caregivers to assist learners with their homework after school and to provide them with the necessary support,' said Alderman Grant Twigg, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management.
Going forward, Mr Paulse in partnership with the Jill Fernandez Foundation, will be monitoring and tracking all the participants to provide them with the necessary support to assist with improving literacy.
