We have seen so much inaccurate reporting and fake news around an amendment to a section of one of the City's existing bylaws.
The amendments being proposed are simply to bring into line the provisions that are already in the Criminal Procedures Act, which is a national Act.
Municipalities were
asked to ensure that their bylaw was aligned to the Act.
And that is what all municipalities across South Africa are currently doing.
The bylaw deals with the management of public pl aces and noise levels on properties within Cape Town.
In this time of so much fake news and so many self-named experts, I felt it was my duty to provide you with accurate information.
At this stage, the amendment is only a proposal.
After the deadline ends, we will consider all contributions received so read the bylaw at www.capetown.gov.za/haveyoursay and make sure to send your comments to us.
Basically, the amendments deal with the increased roles and responsibilities as conferred on Law Enforcement officials by the
Justice Minister in 2018.
The draft amendments allow the City's enforcement services to give more meaningful effect to these amended powers.
It will also allow the officers to respond more meaningfully to the serious crime issues in many areas with high crime rates.
Despite all the noise around this, the bylaw is not intended to curtail worship or infringe on people's privacy.
I invite you to form your own opinion and not be led by those with their own agenda.
Read the bylaw, send us your comments and we'll take them into consideration.
Stay safe and don't forget to wear your mask.
Take care of yourself and those you love during these trying times.
