A place of safety for abandoned babies in Somerset West, the Heartland Baby Sanctuary says its struggling to meet its daily needs because of the lockdown.
They look after abused, abandoned and sick babies and children of up to the age of six.
The Sanctuary says funds from government cover
about a fifth of their financial costs and the rest are met through their sustainability project which includes a coffee shop and a bookstore.
CEO Monica Buitendag says their running cost s of R250 000 a month is falling short by at least 100 thousand rand .
"We don't really have a huge financial foundation, so that means we won't be able to continue, because during this period we had to close down our sustainability project and our sustainability project brings in about R100 000 a month, which helps with the shortfall because the Department of Social Development does fund us about 23 percent and the rest is funded by sustainability projects " The facility
runs through 72 nappies per day for small babies.
Some of its 30 staff members have already taken a cut in their salary to keep its doors open.
Community support provides for clothes, nappies and other necessities, but without funding this crucial service will be lost.
