The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape says more than four thousand five hundred police officers in the province have failed to complete their Firearms
competency test in the 2017/2018 financial year. DA spokesperson for Community Safety, Mireille Wenger says this is because the shooting range complex is not fully operational. She also says there's been a shortage of ammunition. Wenger says more than 27 percent of the officers in the province cannot fully deliver services to their communities. ''The effect of not pursuing this aim is that police officers might be fearful to enter crime ridden communities because they don't have the equipment they need to protect themselves, let alone the communities that are in need of their service.'' The SAPS could not yet be reached for comment.
