Western Cape Finance Minister, Dr Ivan Meyer, has allocated the bulk of his 63...

Western Cape Finance Minister, Dr Ivan Meyer, has allocated the bulk of his 63-billion-rand budget to health and education. Meyer is tabling the budget in the provincial legislature. He says 23-billion-rand will go to health and a further 22-billion has been set aside for education. Meyer says the current drought has impacted on the budget allocation but essential services have been prioritised. " It is important given the risks of the current budget as it relates to the drought and the water crisis and the national budget cuts, we came to the conclusion that it is impossible to cut front line service delivery and so this budget is protecting health, education, social services because those departments are involved in front line service delivery, so this budget protects those departments. We are protecting the poor. "
