The male accused assaulted her for the first time shortly before *Railen's death.
Before that she never had any reason not to trust the man " with her children". The 29-year-old woman, charged together with her friend of child abuse and murder of her three-year-old son, testified in the Johannesburg High Court on Tuesday.
The court heard last week that the boy died on June 25, 2016 after multiple blows inflicted with a blunt object. He had burns over 60% of his body, cooked feet soles and nail beds.
The mother and her 36-year-old friend, both deny guilt.
The mother, who comes from Nelspruit, testified that she had met her friend through a girlfriend after breaking up her relationship with the father of *Railen and his older brother in 2014.
"It was important for me that he accept the boys, but the paternal role came natural to him, " she testified. The man has two children of his own. She said the boys got on well with him and later started calling him "daddy", out of their own choice.
After she was retrenched from her job, she moved in with her boyfriend and his mother (and lived on her pension) in Johannesburg in February 2015. Although the mother started working again in May that year, the man was unemployed for several months. She testified that in the day he would look after the children while she was at work. She described him as helpful when she became pregnant with their first girl. "*Railen was very close to the man and followed him everywhere."
Dr. Candice Hansmeyer, the pathologist who conducted the autopsy, showed the court last week two "older injuries": an elbow fracture and a femur fracture, the latter being part of the accusation. The mother continued to insist that injuries should be attributed to a fall off of a bicycle, and a fall from a tree, although Hansmeyer said those incidents were the first of a pattern of injuries that indicate child abuse.
With the femur incident on March 31, 2016, doctors showed the mother other injuries to *Railen's eye, nipple and left breast, but she testified that *Railen had the eye injury when he ran into a door.
The other bruises she attributed to the fall from the tree.
According to the court documents, social workers were informed, but the mother testified that the case was closed after a visit to their home.
The night before his death, she found *Railen on the sofa bed in the main bedroom after he was complaining about flue during the day. His older brother was also in the room.
The mother testified that the man had come to the room with their baby in his arms and suddenly became aggressive. He held her in a corner of the room and clenched her chin between his fists. He then pressed her on the bed and cursed her. "I was terrified. I did not understand what was going on and I could not get away. "
The man apparently told her he would show her how to feel "bitter".
It was then that he would also say to her, "I finally " f_ _ _ked him up" and pointed to *Railen.
When the man finally went to bed she woke up the boy. According to the female accused, *Railen convinced her that he was when he said "I'm ok, Mom". She stated she saw a red mark on the left side of his face, but it did not bother her, because he was sleeping on his left side.
In the early hours she heard *Railen call out for his brother. He wanted to go for a walk.
She woke up later when the man repeatedly said *Railen 's name where the boy lay on the couch again. She was scared because "his face looked quite different".
The mother began to cry uncontrollably after she had to point out injuries from pictures of *Railen 's body. The court then adjourned. She shortly collapsed into the court's bathroom, after which the court adjourned until Wednesday.
** "This post is about baby *Railen, who was burned over 60% of his body, battered until his little bones were broken, and bruised too many times for pathologist to count"**
