Chesterville rapist handed down 18 year jail sentence
On 29 January 2018, Durban Magistrates Court convicted and sentenced Mfaniseni Sandile Magudulela Mbonambi (29) to 18
years imprisonment for rape that he committed at Chesterville. On 13 October 2008 at 19:30, a 28-year-old victim was with her friend in the house when she was called by the accused who pretended to be sent by her boyfriend. The victim went outside the house but she refused to go with the accused. The accused threatened her with broken bottle and forced her to go with him in dark passage where he raped her. A case of rape was opened at Cato Manor police station and the docket was transferred to Brighton Beach Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation that led to arrest of the accused on 1 August 2016. The accused made various court appearances until he was convicted and sentenced.
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the sentence handed down to the accused. " Our Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences investigators will make sure that they thoroughly investigate such cases and arrest the perpetrators. We cannot tolerate culprits who terrorise our vulnerable women and children. We urge all victims of violent crimes to report such incidents to the police, " he said.
