Organisers of the Berg River Canoe Marathon have assured paddlers that river conditions will be favourable this year. Race Committee Chairperson, Enslin van Riet, says after a number of years of a very low river and impassable sections, this year's event from the third to the sixth of July, promises to be better. He says the weather forecast for the month points to good winter rains. The Department of Water Affairs has committed to two water releases from the Berg River dam, starting two days before the marathon. Van Riet says the clearing of alien vegetation, such as hyacinth and water lettuce, is also proceeding well. A team of paddlers is also combing a section with tree blocks, between Zonquasdrift and Gouda, which will be cleared by chainsaw by the time of the race.
