A subsidiary of arms manufacturer, Denel, says it is achieving remarkable results in Turkey with the clearance of landmines in one of the world's most dangerous border areas. Mechem has destroyed nearly 45-thousand landmines on the eastern border of Turkey since 2016. Mechem's General Manager, Warren Faro, says their operations have yielded unsurpassed results in the clearing of landmines. Clearance is done manually by Mechem teams with the support of mine detecting dogs. Faro says once the mine fields are successfully cleared, they are released. He says more than 8000 land mines were found within the first five months of operations in 2016. The clearance of the mine fields presents the opportunity to re-purpose the land for other activities, such as agriculture. The Turkish Government is committed to destroy all its landmines by 2022.
