National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise says the DA's letter of request for Parliament to remove the Public Protector from Office, is receiving attention. Modise has responded to DA Chief Whip John Steenhuisen about the request. Steenhuisen says Busisiwe
Mkhwebane is not fit to hold office. In a statement Parliament says the Speaker is obligated in terms of the rules to refer such a request to an appropriate structures of Parliament for its consideration. Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says Modise sought advice on the appropriate way of dealing with the DA's request, because certain structures of the 6th Parliament have not yet been established. Mothapo says a similar request was previously considered by the Justice and Correctional
Services Committee in the 5-th Parliament. He says the previous committee recommended to the National Assembly in February not to support the request to expedite proceeding to remove the Public Protector from office because such removal proceedings were premature. Meanwhile the Rules Committee is expected to meet on Wednesday to structure the new Parliamentary Portfolio Committees in line with the Portfolios of the new Ministries.
