Parliament has released the order of proceedings that will take place during the first sitting of the National Assembly today. 400 designated members will be sworn in as MPs by Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng. Parliament says guests that are attending the sitting and political party candidates who have to be sworn in are expected to arrive from 8:30am and have to be seated in the Chamber by 10:15am. After the swearing in of MPs, Mogoeng will call for nominations of candidates for the election of the Speaker. If there are more than one nominations, the election will be conducted though the use of a secret ballot. Counting of ballot papers will be done in the presence of the Chief Justice and the results announced. After the election of the Speaker, she will preside over the election of the deputy. If there is more than one nomination for the position of Deputy Speaker, the same secret ballot voting procedure will be done and counting of ballot papers will be carried out in the presence of the Chief Justice and the results announced. The order of the day further states that the House will adjourn at lunch time and reconvene at 2pm when the Chief Justice will preside over the election of the President.
