STATEMENT 25 August 2021 City Power Management has welcomed the arrest of two white male suspects for vandalism and suspected theft of electricity infrastructure in Roodepoort.
The two were arrested last night after they cut the locks to gain access in to the substation chamber in Florida.
Inside the substation they cut
and stole some cables leading to power going off.
They were found with steel-cutting equipment and other tools including saws.
Three already cut padlocks were also found in their possession.
The two suspects were handed over to the police where a case of vandalism and theft of essential infrastructure has been opened.
The area of Florida and the surroundings in Roodepoort have been plagued by outages due to vandalism of the infrastructure and theft of the copper cables in recent times.
Just this week Fleurhof, Witpoortjie, Discovery were some of the areas near where the suspects were arrested, that had incidents of cable theft and vandalism.
Police have been asked to investigate whether they are linked to some of the theft in the area.
The arrests
come after a security beef up and heightened patrols of all of our electricity installations across the City of Johannesburg, and the collaborations forged with the community structures including the Policing Forums, neighbourhood watch, and ratepayers associations to help curb the scourge of cable theft.
We appeal to the justice cluster to ensure the punishment of those found guilty of vandalism and theft of essential infrastructure fits the crime and serves as deterrent to other criminals.
Power at the vandalized substation has just been restored.
Residents should report any suspicious movement around our infrastructure to our Security Risk Control on 011 490 7900/7911 Or to the nearest SAPS 10111.
