Over 300 families been resettled in temporary structures following a devastating fire in Masiphumele near Kommetjie in the South Peninsula.
The fire gutted more than 1 000 shacks just before Christmas last year.
More than 4 000 people were left homeless without basic needs such as food and clothing.
This
prompted a massive humanitarian drive and the declaration of a local disaster which made the necessary resources available.
Today, 400 temporary structures have been erected through the joint efforts of all three spheres of government.
There are plans to house the rest of the affected families in similar temporary structures on a nearby sports field.
Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Tertius Simmers says the department is looking into new technologies to build permanent structures for the fire victims of Msiphumelele.
Beneficiaries are happy that they have been accommodated, but there are concerns about brewing tensions in the community involving those who have not been placed.
Authorities say besides those who are still legitimately waiting to be placed, some
who were not affected by the fire now want to benefit.
79 more beneficiaries are due to move in by the end of the week.
