Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has re-iterated that the procurement of vaccines will be done by the national government and not individual provinces.
This after the Western Cape has announced its plan to procure its own batch of Covid-19 vaccines.
Mkhize says most vaccine manufacturing companies would prefer dealing with
the national governments as opposed to provinces as the procurement will be in large quantities.
Mkhize has said this during his Covid-19 oversight in Limpopo
hospitals: "The different manufacturing companies are actually dealing with governments.
There are reasons why they do so.
The first of those reasons is that governments come with large volumes as opposed to individuals coming with a small number, couple of hundreds couple of thousands.
It's s unlikely that you can have a specific concurrence for a whole government to procure based on the department placing the order and then you go and give a similar concurrence to a provincial government when they are supposed to go back to the same treasury and ask
for a separate pot of money to be able to go and buy, that we think that it's not practical."
