The Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry says too little progress is being made in the fight against extortion of businesses in Cape Town.
It has called on police to step up their efforts in fighting the scourge.
President of the Chamber Janine Myburgh says extorting protection money from small
businesses has become lucrative for syndicates.
Myburgh says criminals have now expanded their threats to ordinary people with jobs.
Meanwhile, Western Cape Minister of Community Safe ty Albert Fritz has condemned a spate of murders which took place in Cape Town over the past weekend.
Since Friday, at least six people were killed in separate incidents of shooting and stabbing in Manenberg, Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, Clarke's Estate, Atlantis and Kalkfontein.
Three teenagers are among the victims.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Community Safety Cayla Murray says the minister has called on police to leave no stone unturned in their investigations and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
