As New Year's is quickly approaching and lots of families will be spending their New Year day on the beach the following guidelines need to be taken into account:

1. Small children - Write your cellphone number with a permanent marker onto their arm – this will assist law enforcement to contact you if the missing child is found.
2. Keep an eye on children at all times when playing near water, be it pool , lake or sea.
3. Swim at beaches where there are life guards on duty. Always swim between the Red and Yellow flags.
4. Never swim alone – by having a friend nearby they can quickly determine if there is a problem or not and call for help.
5. If someone is in trouble in the water, get help from a lifeguard. Do not try and save them yourself if not trained to do so as this might leave you also in danger.
6. Don't swim after dark – this makes it harder for anyone to see if there is a problem.
7. Drink plenty of water! It is very easy to dehydrate whilst on holiday. Apart from the dehydration caused by the sun, heat and wind, will also contribute to water loss from your body. The effects of dehydration can be very unpleasant and in chronic cases, deadly! Drink lots of water this will assist in making sure fluids are replaced while in the sun.
8. Put on sunblock before going to the beach and reapply it every 2 hours to make sure you are protected at all times.
9. Save the following numbers on your cellphone in case of an emergency :
* National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) – 112
* Western Cape Emergency Centre – 021 480 7700
* Community Medics – 087 230 0404
